The Dabbers are two games away from the FA Cup First Round Proper after a comfortable 3-0 win at Telford, despite the hosts plying their trade in the division above. Joe Malkin, Joe Davis and skipper Caspar Hughes found the net, as Nantwich pulled off an impressive cup shock.
After a quiet start from both sides, James Lawrie produced the first effort of the game. He jumped onto Joe Malkin’s flick-on header, but his first-time effort on the half volley went just wide of the post.
Nantwich took the lead as Luke Walsh did a brilliant job to control, and tap the ball onto Malkin, who took one touch, looked up, and curled an effort into the top corner from the edge of the box.
The Dabbers looked to double their lead only minutes later. David Webb’s free-kick hit the wall and rolled back to him, and his second effort was inches away from nestling into the top corner.
But it didn’t take long for Nantwich to get their second. A cross was driven across the six yard box, missed by Malkin and fell fortunately to Joe Davis running in at the back post. His eventual strike took a slight deflection on its way into the back of the net.
With half an hour gone, Telford’s Lewis Reilly had a free header three yards out from goal, but somehow managed to put the ball wide as he aimed for the far post.
The Bucks came close when Brendon Daniels’s excellent free-kick rocketed off the crossbar as Telford continued to put pressure on the Dabbers’ defence.
Telford began the second half continuing to put pressure on Nantwich, however two efforts from half-time substitute Marcus Dinanga didn’t come close to troubling Greg Hall.
Ellis Deeney came close to pulling one back as his low effort from the edge of the box went just wide of the post.
Aaron Williams forced a comfortable save for Greg Hall after the forward wrong-footed two Nantwich players to make space for a shot.
The travelling Dabbers fans were finally able to relax as their teams third goal came. Malkin took the ball down fantastically from Hall’s long kick upfield, he played a quick one-two with Walsh, and then found Hughes on the edge of the box, who took one touch and then blasted the ball into the top corner.
Hughes came close to grabbing his second of the game as he broke through the Telford defence on the half way line. The skippers attempt was saved well by Wycherley who got a strong hand to ball as he was charging out.
The victory for the Dabbers has earned them a home tie with fellow BetVictor Northern Premier Division outfit Morpeth Town in the Third Qualifying Round, though Dave Cooke’s men will initially turn their attention to Tuesday evening’s trip to Mickleover Sports in league action.
