After all the excitement and joy from Saturday’s FA Trophy win over York, the Dabbers must re-focus as they return to league action with the visit of Widnes FC.
Eye-Widnes
Widnes are in solid form, unbeaten in their last 5, which you can extend to just 1 defeat in their last 8 games in all competitions. Their game at the weekend survived the wet weather and they drew 1-1 away at Trafford. Before that they had gained impressive wins over Kidsgrove and Runcorn Linnets, and a draw with Prescot Cables, all teams up there in the table.
They themselves are currently 11th in the table after 16 games, so 1 or 2 in hand on the teams above them, and 2 points and 3 places ahead of the Dabbers having played a game more.
The standout feature of their season so far is the low number of goals they have both scored and conceded. Their 18 scored is the 3rd lowest of anyone, and their just 13 conceded is the joint lowest. That total of just 31 goals in their 16 games is by far the lowest in the division, but bizarrely that has not included any 0-0 draws.
Last Time Out
We have only met Widnes once before, and it was the exact opposite of how Widnes have been this season, in one of the craziest matches you’ll ever see. November 2019 at the Swansway Stadium in the Integro League Cup saw the Dabbers go 3-0 down to then be 4-3 up, all by half time. The Dabbers then went up to 5-3 but managed to lose 6-5 with the last kick of the game. The highlight from a Nantwich perspective was Callum Saunders scoring twice on what was the first appearance of his second spell with the Dabbers.
Players to Watch
Top scorer for Widnes is James Steele with 9 goals in 20 appearances. He got 4 of those in one game against Hednesford earlier in the season.
In goal is Cameron Terry who made 13 appearances for the Dabbers in 2021.
Up top for them is Sean Miller. Not to be confused with former Dabber Shaun, he scored for Widnes against Trafford at the weekend and both he and Jack McGowan have been among the goals in forward positions for them in recent games.
