The Dabbers’ game against Stafford on New Year’s Day will pay tribute to Keith Mottershead, a great servant to both clubs who passed away recently.
There will be a minute’s silence before kick off in his memory after his death on 20th December aged 81.
Affectionately known as ‘Motty’, below is a tribute written by Nantwich club historian Michael Chatwin:
“‘Motty’ served Nantwich in two spells under Colin Hutchinson in the 1970s but will be best remembered for his service to football in his native Stafford.
Keith had played League football with Doncaster Rovers before returning to Stafford Rangers in 1968, featuring for the club for many seasons and being a key member of the side that won the Northern Premier League and FA Trophy in 1972, ending his time there with 42 goals in 205 games. After joining the Dabbers in 1973, he netted 23 goals in 120 Nantwich appearances and he also served Leek Town and Burton Albion.
With his passion for the game, Keith continued his involvement in grassroots football after hanging up his boots and his terrific contribution was recognised in 2013 when Stafford Town honoured him by naming their new stand after him.
A true gentleman, Motty will be greatly missed around the Stafford football community, and thoughts are with Keith’s family and friends at this sad time.”
