The honours were even at the Giant Axe as a well-organised Lancaster squad held off a Nantwich side looking to earn their fourth league win in a row.
Lancaster’s Jack Armer produced the first chance of the game, a weaving run saw him take the ball past three Nantwich players and unleash a powerful low effort on goal from 20 yards out, forcing a fine save from Greg Hall.
Shortly after, young loanee striker Ethon Varian’s constant pressure on the Lancaster defence forced an error from their goalkeeper, who gave the ball away to Sean Cooke. Cooke’s clever chipped effort from 25 yards out fell just wide of the goal-post.
On the half-an-hour mark, Joe Mwasile used his pace and skill to take the ball past two of the Lancaster defenders, but his shot was well blocked and cleared away.
With Nantwich looking the better of the two sides going into half time, Lancaster came out looking to pressure the Nantwich defence early in the second half. A cleared free-kick for the hosts fell to Rob Wilson, who’s volley was blocked well by the Dabbers defenders.
Only seconds later, veteran striker, David Norris caused a mix-up in the Nantwich defence, and won the ball in a dangerous position. But his resulting shot was saved well from Hall.
With 20 minutes to play, Sean Cooke struck a delightful free-kick from the edge of the box, which dipped over the top of the ball and looked to be hitting the back of the net, but came off the cross-bar and was cleared out for a corner.
Down the other side of the pitch, Sam Bailey then hit a powerful strike on the half-volley from the edge of the box which had Hall scrambling across his goal. However, it flew just over the bar.
In the dying embers of the game, substitute Callum Saunders flicked on a header into the path of David Webb, who couldn’t quite keep his resulting shot low enough to earn the Dabbers a last minute goal, and three points on the road.
A victory for the Dabbers would have seen them draw level on points with fellow promotion rivals FC United of Manchester, setting up for a thrilling fixture on Tuesday night at the Weaver Stadium in the BetVictor Northern Premier League. However, a victory on Tuesday night would see Nantwich go one point above their opposition.
