It’s a familiar opponent for the Dabbers this Saturday, as we face Witton Albion for the third time in 7 and a half weeks. With the previous two ending in one win for each side, we preview this unofficial decider.
The Travelling Witt-burys
The turnaround in form for Witton since our double header at the end of November/start of December has been pretty remarkable. After losing to Chasetown on 2nd December, they were 16th in the league and behind the Dabbers. But their victory over Nantwich in the Cheshire Senior Cup seemed to spark a revival and they have barely looked back since.
They have lost only 1 of the 8 games they’ve played since that cold night at the Swansway, and are unbeaten in their last 5. That has included wins over Hanley, Runcorn and Avro. Last weekend, they secured a 2-2 draw at home to Bootle. This has left them 6th in the league, outside the play-offs only on goal difference. It’s the kind of run and jump up the table from a low ebb that the Dabbers have to try and take inspiration from.
Witton’s aspirations of climbing the table could end up being hampered by that goal difference. They have conceded the second most goals in the division, but in their favour on Saturday is that they haven’t lost in their last 4 away matches. Nathan Okome, Frazer Cookson and Troy Bourne will all be suspended for the Dabbers as well.
Last Time We Met
As mentioned, the last meeting between the two sides was in the Cheshire Cup last month, with Witton taking the win and due to play Congleton Town at home in the Quarter Finals next week.
Players to Watch
Connor Hughes has scored another 4 goals since he bagged against the Dabbers in the above game. He’s up to 12 for the season in all competitions, the same number as Byron Harrison has for Nantwich as the two clubs’ respective top scorers.
Harry Brazell has also been in the goals recently. As has former Dabber Ben Harrrison, who scored the second equaliser in the 2-2 draw with Bootle last weekend.
Matt Lowton scored in the reverse league fixture and has barely missed a game for them since, scoring twice more.
