It’s a quick turnaround for everyone in the Northern Premier Division, with the Dabbers playing our final home game of the season just 48 hours after our last one, against Stafford Rangers at the Optimum Pay Stadium on Easter Monday (3pm kick-off).
I Can’t Get No Staff-isfaction
Stafford’s slim hopes of reaching the play-offs were ended on Saturday with a shock 1-0 defeat to third bottom Basford. This would ordinarily make a game like this a dead rubber with neither team playing for anything but pride. But the local derby element adds a layer of intrigue that should make it a good occasion.
Even before Saturday, Rangers’ form had been stuttering, just 2 wins in their last 8 league games before that. But considering they were rock bottom of the table and looking likely to be relegated when Covid ended the 2020 season, this has been a strong upturn in fortunes for them and something they will look to build on going into next season.
And there is still something for Stafford to play for outside the league, they recently beat Stoke City 2-0 to reach the final of the Staffordshire Senior Cup, where they will play Stone Old Alleyninans on 4th May.
Last Time Out
One of the more dramatic games of the Dabbers’ season was the reverse game in Staffordshire in December. Going 2-0 down in the last 10 minutes it looked like another difficult defeat was coming, but Connor Heath and Sean Cooke dragged the Dabbers level late on and could even have won it. Highlights from that are available below.
Players to Watch
The usual suspects still apply for the visitors on Monday, Tom Tonks and Jake Charles aren’t troubling the top goalscorer charts but are very consistent performers, Charles only came off the bench on Saturday after a brief spell out with injury but if he plays you can bet he’ll want to repeat his feat of scoring from the December fixture.
