It’s a huge clash for the Dabbers this weekend, as table-toppers South Shields visit Cheshire. Here, we preview the kind of match that Nantwich could face come Saturday.
From Shielding to Shields
The facts are that this will be as tough an opponent as the Dabbers have faced since before the pandemic. South Shields are top of the PitchingIn Northern Premier Division on 29 points. They have the best goal difference in the division. They haven’t lost in the league yet. And they have won every away league game they’ve played this season. Three days after Nantwich lost 3-1 away at Radcliffe, South Shields went there and won 4-0.
But then you look at the resources they have at their disposal and you cannot be surprised. It’s well known that they have many full-time players as they move towards becoming a fully professional club. And they are currently undergoing an extensive rebuild of their main stand that they’ve publicised with a detailed 3D video.
Last Time Out
The two sides last met at the Optimum Pay Stadium and South Shields came out on top 1-0 in March 2020. A goal early in the second half from Bali Mumba gave the visitors all three points, as well as a 12 point lead at the top of the league that sadly was never rewarded as Covid brought an end to the season. Highlights (filmed by South Shields that night) of that match can be viewed below:
Players To Watch
Forward Darius Osei has 4 goals in Shields’ last 5 games, and in a recent 3-2 win over Warrington they won two penalties and both were scored by Robert Briggs, so any set piece opportunities like that can be expected to be put away.
