Match Preview: Nantwich Town v Avro FC

The Dabbers’ last game before Christmas sees the reverse of the season’s opening fixture, as Avro FC visit the Swansway Stadium for the first time.

Avro Self a Merry Little Christmas

The expectation from most outsiders before the season was not unreasonably that Avro may struggle playing up in the 8th tier for the first time in their history. But as we nearly reach 2o24, there is not a bit of that in their form as they have been outstanding so far.

They have only lost once in their last 7 games going back to the start of November. That was to Runcorn Linnets who are also in the play-offs with them. In fact, they have only lost 3 games all season, the fewest of any team.

The only reason they aren’t higher than their current 3rd in the league is the number of draws, 3 and 5 more, respectively, than the two sides above them.

Avro have only lost once away from home all season, to Bootle at the end of October. They have won away at Leek and Prescot already, the two teams that are above them in the table.

Goals wise, their numbers are similar both for and against to that of Widnes from when we played them a couple of weeks ago. They don’t score many but they don’t concede many either. 6 of their 8 wins in the league have been by a one-goal margin.

Last Time We Met

Back on opening day in August, the Dabbers squandered a number of chances before eventually losing 1-0 to a Joe Rathbone goal, a result that very much set the tone for the two teams’ seasons up to this point. Highlights below, courtesy of Avro’s Youtube channel.

Players to Watch

Avro have had 16 different goalscorers in all competitions, exactly the same number as Nantwich. But while our top scorer Byron Harrison is on 10, Avro’s joint highest are on 4 (Liam Ellis and Kyle Hawley).

Another to watch is recent signing Max Harrop. He scored Stalybridge’s first from the penalty spot in that agonising 3-2 Dabbers defeat at Bower Fold in November. He’s yet to get off the mark for Avro but has 4 goals this season from Stalybridge.
