Everyone at Nantwich Town is devastated to learn of the passing of former Dabbers centre-back Courtney Meppen-Walters at the age of 32.
Courtney initially joined the Dabbers on loan from Guiseley in December 2023, but such was the immediate positive impact he had on the defence and results for the team, he joined on a permanent deal just a few weeks later.
In total, he made 33 appearances in a Nantwich shirt and scored 3 goals, including a famous low free kick against Stalybridge, before leaving to join Bury in December 2024.
His aerial and physical dominance on the pitch combined with an infectious and positive personality off it made him an immediate and continued fan’s favourite and a central figure in the Nantwich dressing room.
Nantwich Chairman Jon Gold said:
“Courtney was a larger than life character with the biggest heart and he quickly became loved by both the Dabbers faithful and his fellow players, who all looked up to his inspirational leadership. He left a lasting impression on everyone that was fortunate enough to meet him and whilst there were sadly some dark times in his life, something that he never shied away from, the Courtney we knew was full of positivity and inspiration and our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and all that knew him at such an incredibly sad time.”
Paul Carden, the Dabbers manager who brought Courtney to Nantwich, said:
“I’m absolutely devastated. He was a real presence on and off the pitch; when he came to us on loan, he really pulled the squad together. He was such a personality and such a warm person with that. I think every club manager and team-mate of his would say the same thing about him, about how infectious his personality was and how he’d brighten up a room every time he walked into it and put smiles on people’s faces.
That’s why the news is so sad and tragic. My heart goes out to his family.”
And Jon Moran, who played alongside and managed Courtney at Nantwich, said:
“I am heartbroken to hear the awful and tragic news of Meps’ passing. He was an incredible person, a great friend to so many, and an absolute pleasure to work with, both as a manager and as a teammate. The impact he had on me, and on so many of the players who were fortunate enough to share a dressing room with him, was extraordinary.
Meps was someone who will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.
My thoughts, love and deepest condolences are with his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.
