Nantwich Town recorded an emphatic victory over Cammell Laird to move into the Third Round of the Cheshire Senior Cup.
The Magnificent Seven were spread over five Dabbers players, including young Callum Parker with his first for the club, Dave Cooke’s strong line-up paying dividends in a repeat of last year’s final in this competition.
It was Callum Saunders who opened the scoring, and as with a few of the goals, persistence was handsomely rewarded, David Webb chasing down an over-hit ball and pulling it across brilliantly to give Saunders the easiest of finishes.
The second goal was much of the same, just from the opposite side, Jimmy Lawrie receiving a throw-in the box before turning and finding Sean Cooke who swept in with his left foot to double the lead.
Once more, persistence was the key in the Dabbers third goal. Will Saxon, an early sub for injured skipper Caspar Hughes, was dispossessed on the right hand side. But he hassled the Cammell Laird defender into allowing him the ball back, and after twisting and turning his way into the box, hit a low shot that just had enough pace to squeeze under the hand of Lairds keeper Michael Dixon. Saxon had earned his luck.
A purple patch of 4 goals in just over 20 minutes was topped off by Lawrie. Cooke showed great vision to slip the ball between the Lairds defence for Lawrie, and the Dabbers number 7 tucked it away smartly across Dixon into the far corner.
With the tie effectively over at half time, the Dabbers could relax for once and enjoy themselves in the second period.
Goal number five came on 68 minutes. A free kick was whipped towards goal by Cooke, it took a deflection and went in last off the unfortunate Dixon.
Just after that goal, young Callum Parker was given another run in the first team off the bench, and rewarded his manager’s faith.
The two Callums combined for the sixth goal. Saunders saw a shot parried away by Dixon, Parker picked up the rebound and found Saunders again to bag his second of the evening.
Things got even better for the young striker just two minutes before full time. Sean Cooke outpaced his man on the right and played a peach of a cross onto the head of Parker who nodded in his first senior goal for Nantwich from just inside the six-yard-box, where all good strikers get their goals.
It was the highlight of a confidence-building night for the Dabbers, as we look to get back to winning ways in the league on the Yorkshire coast in Scarborough on Saturday.
