Match Report: Nantwich Town 0-3 Crewe Alexandra
03/07/2022
Report by Adam Bateman, photo by Jonathan White A new season brings new hope, and new expectations, and in front of a packed Swansway Stadium, Nantwich took to the pitch against their local rivals, Crewe Alexandra for the Barry Daly Memorial Trophy in the first pre-season game ahead of the new season. With a few players unavailable to manager Dave Cooke, there was an unfamiliar look to the starting eleven that took to the pitch. On what was a really good looking pitch, and perfect weather, the teams started the game, and the home side started off well, with Caspar Hughes being the first one to have a shot, with it flashing over the bar from the edge of the area, a warning of what was to come perhaps for Crewe. Sadly, after just a few minutes more, an error at the back from Scott Butler, where he poked the ball into his own net, allowed the visitors to take a somewhat of an undeserved lead. His teammates tried to rally him and he was soon back to his best, as he had more defending to do. Nantwich looked to come back into the game, and Connor Heath tried his best to test the visiting goalkeeper Dave Richards with a shot that was tipped round the post for a corner. From that resulting corner, Joe Robbins shot just wide, after a well worked routine, that had the crowd applauding the effort. From there it was a fairly even game, with both sides looking to score, with Chris Long for the Alex looking dangerous out wide. For the Dabbers, as the lone man up front, Dan Cockerline was tightly marked, and was finding it hard to bring others into play. The best chance for the home side came on the half hour mark, when Heath was put through, one on one, but sadly Richards did very well to thwart him, and the home side remained behind. After that, Crewe looked to regain their dominance, which resulted in a Griffiths free-kick that was saved very well by Louis Gray in the home net. Just before half time though, the lead for the away side was doubled, with some great work out wide by Long, who put a lovely ball into the box, and Adam Wilson was on hand to tap the ball into an empty net. That was how the teams went into half time, with Crewe leading by two goals. From there, in the second half, both sides made a lot of changes, to give a fair few players a chance to get some much needed minutes, and to get some fitness ahead of the season. Heath was very lively still forcing some dangerous situations, before he was replaced by Callum Huxley. One change that had an impact was the change of goalkeeper for Nantwich, as Louis Gray was replaced by Reece Quinn, and the substitute goalkeeper was called into action, but sadly, he was adjudged to have brought down Bassala Sambou, and Crewe had a penalty, and a chance to add to their goal total on the day. The man brought down for the pen, dusted himself down to take it, but Quinn redeemed himself, as he dived down to his right and he saved the penalty, but very unfortunately for him, he pushed it out and Sambou, as all good players should, followed up and put the ball into the net. As such, the visitors went three goals to the good, and the home side had a very big mountain to climb. Joe Robbins tried to get the Dabbers back into the game, with a shot that went just over the bar, and that was just about it. The game finished with a Crewe win, but it was nonetheless a very good run out for manager Dave Cooke, and for the players that took to the pitch, in front of a very sizeable 1216 crowd. Teams: Nantwich Town: Louis Gray, Jacob Edwards, Matty Devine, Scott Butler, Troy Bourne, Caspar Hughes, Connor Heath, Matt Bell ©, Dan Cockerline, Joe Robbins, Joe Mwasile Subs:- Shaun Miller, Reece Quinn, Jack Sherratt, Callum Huxley, Matty France, Kobe Nelson, Alfonso Castellano, Josh Thornton, Marius Mocanu Crewe Alexandra: First Half Team:- Dave Richards, Kelvin Mellor, Lewis Billington, Regan Griffiths, Billy Sass-Davies, Rod McDonald, Chris Long, Tariq Uwakwe, Coiurtney Baker-Richardson, Chris Sang, Adam Wilson Second Half Team:- Tom Booth, Connor O’Riordan, Bassala Sambou, Dan Agyei, Callum Ainley, Matus Holicek, Owen Lunt, Kornell McDonald, Charlie Finney, Luke Offord, Chris Sang Goals: Butler (OG, 3), Wilson (43), Sambou (81) Attendance: 1216...

Dabbers sign up A-Jay Leitch-Smith
02/07/2022
Nantwich Town are delighted to announce the signing of forward A-Jay Leitch-Smith ahead of the 2022/23 season. Most recently at Altrincham, 32-year-old Leitch-Smith is best known as a product of the Crewe Alex academy, coming up through the ranks to spend 6 years as part of the first team at Gresty Road. He was a part of one of the most successful spells in the Alex’s recent history, scoring a vital goal in the 2012 League Two Play-Off Semi Final away at Southend and assisting one of the goals at Wembley as they gained promotion to League One. He also came off the bench in Crewe’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy victory at Wembley the following year, before departing the club in 2014 with 22 goals in 122 games. Leitch-Smith remained an EFL player for the following 7 years, barring a loan spell in Scotland with Dundee where he bagged 6 goals in the Scottish Premiership in the 2017/18 season. Spells at Yeovil, a successful season at Port Vale, Shrewsbury and Morecambe followed, before he accepted an offer to play under former Dabbers boss Phil Parkinson at Altrincham in the National League, where last season he scored 4 goals and assisted 1 in 19 appearances. A-Jay spoke to us about his signing, saying: “It’s great to be here, I’ve been talking to the gaffer for a while so it’s great to get it done. It’s good to be based back in Cheshire agin, there’s a great set-up here so I’m looking forward to getting started.” And manager Dave Cooke said of A-Jay: “A-Jay’s a class act, lives locally, and we hope he can slot in here. We think he has the potential to be one of the best strikers in this league.” A-Jay is wearing our new home shirt for this season, which is available to pre-order now from our Club Shop or online here. And to buy tickets for any of our home pre-season fixtures where you could see A-Jay in action, click here....

Keeper Louis Gray joins the Dabbers
02/07/2022
Photo by Peter Robinson Nantwich Town are delighted to announce the signing of goalkeeper Louis Gray. The 26-year-old started his career at his home town club Wrexham, with loans to Rhyl and Cefn Druids, where he played 13 times, early on. He was then signed by Everton to be a part of their youth squad and made some appearances in Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy, then more loans followed to Colwyn Bay and Carlisle. He signed for Nuneaton after being released by the Toffees, then returned to Carlisle, before he made a loan move to Chester that soon became permanent. And it was at Chester that Gray broke through and made 50 first-team appearances for the club before his move to the Swansway Stadium. Manager Dave Cooke spoke to us about Gray’s signing, saying: “Louis had gained some great experience at Chester, we believe he can settle in quickly and secure that position in goal” To buy tickets for any of our home pre-season games to see Louis in action, click here....

Jack Sherratt signs for Nantwich
02/07/2022
Photo by Peter Robinson Nantwich Town are delighted to announce the signing of attacking midfielder Jack Sherratt. Sherratt started out at Kidsgrove, where he did well enough to be signed by Leyton Orient. Orient loaned him out to Stalybridge, and he then spent a year in Canada playing for Kitchener-Waterloo United FC in the 4th tier of American soccer, a team that have since dissolved. After his spell in North America, Sherratt joined Northwich Victoria in 2015, then moving onto Stafford after a second spell at Kidsgrove. In 2020, he joined Hyde United, where he made 21 appearances over two seasons, the first being one of the Covid curtailed campaigns, before the versatile midfielder became a Dabber. Speaking about Jack’s signing, manager Dave Cooke said: “Jack’s local to the area, he’s been around our league for a few years with Stafford and Hyde, he did well against us when Hyde won at our place last year, he’s a player I’ve liked for a while and he should strengthen the squad.” Jack is wearing our brand new away shirt for this season, and you can pre-order that right now from our Club Shop or online here. Ritchie Sutton makes Dabbers return
02/07/2022
Photo by Peter Robinson Nantwich Town are delighted to announce the return of former Dabbers defender Ritchie Sutton to the Swansway Stadium in a player/coach role. The 36-year-old centre-back previously played for the Dabbers in the 2009/10 season, making 40 appearances before being snapped up by Port Vale to step back into professional football. His early career was spent on loans away from Crewe Alex, where he started as part of their academy. One of those loan teams, Stafford Rangers, signed Sutton up after his release by the Alex in 2007. Spells at Northwich Victoria and Halifax followed, then after the Dabbers and Vale, over 150 appearances at Mansfield Town as part of the squad that got into the EFL, and 100+ appearances at Tranmere Rovers where he was part of another National League to League Two promotion. A loan at Barrow, 2 seasons at Morecambe, and 2 more years at Altrincham, have brought him full circle back to the Dabbers. Speaking on his return, Sutton said: “It’s an absolute pleasure, being a local lad and living in the area, I’ve always followed their results since I left 12 years ago. I know some great people here, always kept in touch with the chairman and Dave, it feels good and the right thing to be back.” Manager Dave Cooke said: “Ritchie lives locally, he’s recently completed his A licence and I think he has the makings of a great manager in future, plus his knowledge of the club from his previous spell and his years in the EFL means he can bring a wealth of experience to the squad.” Ritchie is wearing our brand new home shirt, to pre-order one for yourself, visit our Club Shop or order online here. Dabbers unveil new kits for 22/23 season
02/07/2022
Photos by Peter Robinson Nantwich Town Football Club are delighted to be able to present our official 2022/23 Home & Away Shirts. FBT Europe and Nantwich Town are delighted to announce the launch of the 22/23 season kits for Nantwich Town. The green home shirt pays homage to our home shirt in 2016/17. The black sash across the middle of the shirt was a huge hit with supporters and it made it one of our most popular shirts. It now has a more modernised twist with “The Dabbers” subliminally printed onto the fabric too. Our yellow away shirt has a blue trim which allows the club to show their support to people of Ukraine. The colour scheme again pays homage a previous kit that was well liked by supporters. The shirt also includes a very slight pattern which again gives it a more modern twist. We are delighted to once again extend our partnership with FBT for another season and look forward to a successful season both on and off the pitch. Both kits, alongside other Dabbers merchandise, are available to pre-order at our Club Shop, or online https://bit.ly/3IbvDkJ...

Joe Malkin leaves the Dabbers to join Connah’s Quay Nomads
20/06/2022
Photos by Jonathan White Nantwich Town can announce that striker Joe Malkin has joined Cymru Premier side Connah’s Quay Nomads after four years with the Dabbers. Signed in the summer of 2018 after a prolific spell at Cammell Laird, Malkin settled straight in to Dave Cooke’s squad, notching 11 goals and 2 assists in 41 appearances, a return that earned him the Northern Premier Division Young Player of the Year. A brace away at Stafford Rangers that season will live long in Dabbers’ supporters memories (pictured below). In the 19/20 season, Malkin kicked on again, scoring 14 goals in all competitions to be the club’s top scorer (pictured below) before the season was cut short by the onset of the pandemic. A standout goal in that season was his brilliant finish away at AFC Telford United in the FA Cup Second Qualifying Round, as part of an incredible 3-0 upset win that saw us on our way to the First Round Proper for only the third time in the club’s history. (see below) After the 20/21 season was also cut short, Joe suffered a bad hamstring injury early in 21/22 which meant he didn’t make his first appearance until November that year. He made his final Dabbers appearance in the final game of the season away at Bamber Bridge. Popular with supporters and teammates, Malkin finishes with 27 goals in 98 Dabbers appearances. Malkin had these words for us on his time with the Dabbers: “Thank you to everyone at Nantwich from the first team staff to the people behind the scenes. I’ve had some great times at the club and had some great memories. Thanks to everyone at the club.” Everyone at Nantwich Town wishes Joe the best for the future and thanks him for his efforts and the memories he made in a Dabbers shirt....
