By Steve Sharman:
Craig Lindfield’s fourth goal in five games made it ten unbeaten in the league for Nantwich Town as they claimed a 1-0 win away at Marine on Tuesday evening.
Lindfield pounced moments before half-time following James Lawrie’s cut back from the left hand side, in a game which the Dabbers defended resolutely to continue their recent good form.
Manager Dave Cooke made just the once change from the weekend home draw with Workington as Joe Malkin replaced Callum Saunders who dropped to the bench, with Joel Stair continuing to captain the side in Caspar Hughes’ absence.
The game started very scrappily as both sides were unable to gain a firm grip of possession although Sean Cooke tested Martin Fearon early on with a long range effort.
Malkin then headed wide from six yards as the hosts looked for their captain Danny Mitchley on a number of occasions with a long ball, however the centre back pairing of Stair and Toby Mullarkey dealt with any danger.
Chances were few and far between as Cooke fired a free kick over the bar, before Mitchley then had the game’s best opportunity but shot wide of the far post after getting in behind the Dabbers’ defence.
With the half only moments from ending, the Dabbers took the lead as Lindfield was alert inside the six yard box to stab the ball home after Lawrie had cut back Cooke’s right wing cross.
The second period followed in the same fashion as the first and the hosts did look bright earlier on however Fearon had to get down well to palm away Joe Mwasile’s close range header.
Danny Shaw then headed wide for the hosts as they began to test the Dabbers defence with Fabian Spiess called into an excellent save midway through the half as he palmed away Steve Irwin’s powerful half volley.
Despite the hosts having more of the ball, the Dabbers looked solid in defence and perhaps should have killed the game late on as substitute Steve Jones capitalised on a short back pass but saw his eventual shot strike the post.
Lawrie tested Fearon with a well struck free kick in the final moments of the game as the Dabbers saw out stoppage time to claim maximum points and make it ten games unbeaten in the league.
Next up, the Dabbers travel to Bower Fold this weekend as they take on Stalybridge Celtic in the First Qualifying Round of the FA Trophy on Saturday.
Live uninterrupted coverage of the game will be provided over on the club’s radio DabbersLive from 2.45pm – www.mixlr.com/NTFCLive.
