By Steve Sharman:
Two second half goals saw Nantwich Town make it eight unbeaten in the league as they beat Grantham Town 3-2 on Tuesday evening.
Craig Lindfield and Callum Saunders netted in the second period after Sean Cooke had equalised in the first half in a game the Dabbers dominated.
Manager Dave Cooke made one change from the weekend draw at Mickleover as captain Caspar Hughes was replaced by winger Joe Mwasile.
It was Mwasile who had the first chance of the game within 60 seconds, as he burst into the box from the right hand side before dragging his effort wide of the near post.
A minute later and Grantham had taken the lead as Joe Smith slid the ball past Fabian Spiess despite the Gingerbreads man being in an offside position.
Despite going behind, the Dabbers began to assert their dominance and Mwasile’s fine pass found Cooke in on goal but the midfielder’s touch was too heavy and keeper Theo Richardson was able to collect.
Up the other end Spiess needed to be alert as he made a fine double save from Max Watters and Ryan Oliver, after Grantham had worked the ball into the Nantwich box.
The Dabbers should have been level though on 20 minutes as a brilliantly worked move down the right involving James Lawrie and Lindfield, saw the latter square to Mwasile who somehow dragged his shot wide from six yards.
Referee Mr Kaye was frustrating both sets of players with a number of decisions as the Dabbers had the ball in the net through Saunders, but the flag was raised for offside, despite the forward coming from behind the defender to finish well.
But Nantwich weren’t denied for long as Cooke’s long range free-kick was pushed into his own net by Richardson as the midfielder netted his second goal of the season and brought his side level.
Matt Bell then tested Richardson from distance but the keeper made a comfortable save as both sides went into the break all square.
Grantham started the second period well and were denied by another good save from Spiess who blocked Oliver’s effort after the forward had gone through on goal.
Tom Ward then headed wide at the back post following a floated free-kick from Jacob Fletcher, before Sean Cooke curled straight at Richardson from the edge of the box.
The Dabbers then went deservedly ahead on the hour mark as Lawrie’s pass found Lindfield who expertly curled in from 25-yards off the post.
Nantwich were in firm control as Lindfield, Joel Stair and Cooke all had chances blocked by the Grantham defence following Lawrie’s in-swinging corner.
Richardson was being kept busy in the home goal and he did well to tip Saunders powerful effort over the bar following the forward’s fine run into the box.
It wasn’t long though until the former Crewe striker had the better of Richardson as nine minutes before time he received Lawrie’s through ball to strike past the keeper and add a third for his side.
Substitute Steve Jones then nearly added a fourth as his effort was blocked on the goal line by Ward.
A fourth goal looked likely for the Dabbers as Jones found Saunders on the edge of the box, but his effort flew narrowly over the bar.
With four minutes added on, Grantham pulled a goal back as Fletcher’s free-kick got the better of Spiess to set up a nervy end to the game.
The hosts piled plenty of pressure on the Dabbers and went close to an equaliser but Bell made a brilliant late block in the box to ensure victory for his side and make it six wins and two draws in the last eight games.
Next up, the Dabbers are back at home this Saturday as they take on Workington at the Weaver Stadium with a 3pm KO.
