Jake re-joined the club in October after being released from Matlock Town early in the 2018-19 season.
Phillips began his career at Tranmere Rover, but after narrowly missing out on a professional contract, he joined Llandudno Town, where he was part of their 2015 Huws Gray Alliance title-winning side. Following his stint with the Wings, he was handed an opportunity at Sheffield United, then of League One. He played multiple times for the Blades’ U21 squad, before his contract was cancelled by mutual consent.
Following a short spell with Fleetwood Town, he signed for Brackley Town, whom he helped avoid relegation from the National League North. He spent 2016’s pre-season with Nottingham Forest, but was not offered a deal by the two-time European Cup winners.
He then trained with the likes of Bromley and Braintree Town before signing for Margate after offers from other sides in the National League North. He played as a centre-back and a holding midfielder for Margate but left the club soon after to join Welling United.
In pre-season of the 2017-18 campaign, he trained with various teams from National League to the Welsh Premier after which he re-signed for Llandudno. The defender then joined the Dabbers half-way through the season before signing for Matlock Town.
Upon departing the Gladiators, he re-joined Dave Cooke’s side, where he made a substitute appearance before winning the club’s official Man of the Match award in his first start at home against Warrington Town.
