Nantwich Town extended their winning run in all competitions to 8 games as they came from a goal down to beat Division One North side Mossley AFC 2-1. The win meant they progressed to the 2nd Round of the Integro Doodson League Cup.

The Dabbers named a much changed squad containing a number of players from the youth team. The side found it tough in the first half, struggling to get to grips with a tricky pitch. Mossley took advantage and gained control of the half, taking the lead after a mistake in the Dabbers defence.

Nantwich came out much improved in the 2nd half and started to turn the game in their favour. Their pressure eventually paid off when Dave Walker headed in an Ibou Touray cross 12 minutes from time. The game looked destined for penalties, but a stunning late Theo Stair free kick ensured the Dabbers progressed and kept their winning run going.

Parky named a young team, with Troy Bourne and Jordan Bennion both in starting XI. There were also full debuts for midfielder Cal Jones and defender Keaton Webster. Webster was making his first senior appearance at 16 years of age, a great achievement for the youngster. There were nights off for Bell, Brooke, Abadaki, Riley and Curtis Jones.

Both teams started the game with a high tempo as they looked to get forward at pace. Matty Burke shot well over for Mossley as the teams struggled to create chances. Things got heated 10 minutes into the game as Mossley’s Dave Short and Cal Jones clashed on the halfway line. Short and Bourne then had a coming together a few minutes later as the referee looked to keep tempers low.

The first chance for the Dabbers fell to Walker, as he was played in on goal. He beat the keeper, but the ball trickled just past the far post. Webster was showing great confidence at right back and he was next to try his luck, as he burst from deep and shot wide of goal.

Jordan Bennion

Mossley started to turn up the pressure on the Dabbers and 29 minutes, they got the breakthrough. It came via a mistake in the Nantwich backline as they gave the ball away deep in their own half. Andy Keogh played in Dave Short. He squared to a wide-open Mike Fish, who tapped in to put the Lilywhites ahead.

Mossley had their tails up and looked for more goals, with Short putting an effort over the bar. At the other end, the Dabbers struggled to create openings. Tim Sanders had a shot blocked, whilst Ben Harrison headed wide from a corner as a frustrating half came to a close.

Shortly after the start of the 2nd half, Parky made his first change, bringing on Josh Hancock for Bennion. The Dabbers started to get on top and create chances with Hancock dragging a shot wide of goal. Hancock again shot wide, this time putting a chance over the bar after cutting inside.

Stair then did well to get down the right and he crossed for Hancock, but he couldn’t get good contact on the ball. The Dabbers were well on top and on 67 minutes, their pressure paid off when Touray tricked Mossley keeper Niki-Lee Bulmer into fouling him in the box. However, Bulmer redeemed himself by saving Hancock’s penalty, much to the delight of the home fans.

2 more changes followed, as Joe Mwasile came off and first team coach Danny Griggs made his first appearance of the season. There was also a change in goal, as Parton made way to allow Reece Quinn to get some minutes under his belt. That left Ben Harrison as the only player in the squad to have played every minute of the season.

The penalty miss didn’t deter the Dabbers and with 12 minutes to go, they drew level. Touray got into space down the left and steadied himself before whipping in a great cross to the far post. Walker was in the right place to head home and extend the Dabbers scoring streak.

Dave Walker

Nantwich were now fully on top, with Stair causing all manner of problems down the right wing. He worked some space and drilled a shot at goal, which Bulmer had to bundle away for a corner. At the other end, Keogh smashed a shot well wide as the game ticked down.

With 4 minutes to go, Hancock was fouled 25 yards from goal. Stair stepped up and curled a superb effort into the top corner, giving Bulmer no chance. It was another stunning free kick, his 3rd of the season and his 7th in total.

Mossley tried to hit back, forcing some late pressure on the Dabbers with a number of long balls into the box, but the young defence held firm and saw the game out to keep the teams winning run going.
