INTERVIEW: “Promotion is the key goal” for Malkin

By Ryan Batty:

Striker Joe Malkin says ‘promotion is the key goal’ for the team as the Dabbers approach the final few stretch of the Evo-Stik Premier Division campaign.

Dave Cooke’s side fell to defeat away at Silverlands in midweek against Buxton, and Malkin believes the atmosphere in the dressing room was sombre following the loss.

“Everybody was gutted, especially after going one up away from home.

“We’ve got to work hard now until the end of the season to see us win promotion, which we are in a very good position to do.”

However, the striker believes that on a personal note, he is impressed with his development this year and is on pace to reach the goals he set out at the beginning of the season.

“I always wanted to score ten to fifteen goals this season, which I’m on track to get.

“I’m really fortunate to be playing in the side as it was always going to be tough breaking into the team with the quality and experience of the forwards we have.”

Despite moving up several divisions, Malkin reckons that the transition from North-West Counties Division One football has been smoother than he initially thought it would be.

“It was tough to get into the side at the start of the season, but once I got a run of games under my belt and scored a few it gave my confidence a real boost.

“The lads in the dressing room have helped me with their quality, which makes every aspect of the game easier.

“The pitches are definitely better as well! On another note, regular training has obviously also improved my game.”

As well as the lads in the dressing room helping Malkin, he also believes that the quality in the forward position has also given him a boost.

“The more experienced lads have helped hugely. I’ve learned from their advice and experience which has made me a better player.”

When asked on his goals for the rest of the campaign, from a personal note and from a team perspective, Joe has two clear ambitions in the pipeline.

“From a personal standpoint, I’d like to get to at least fifteen goals. From¬†the perspective of the dressing room, I want to help the team get promoted – that’s the main one.”
